Survival of an infant with amnion rupture sequence: a dilemma for clinicians.

چکیده
Introduction Amnion rupture in early pregnancy results in severe anomalies such as anencephaly, encephalocoele, exencephaly, acrania, facial clefts and absence of limbs (1,2). Most affected fetuses abort in the second trimester, are stillborn or die soon after birth (1,3).We report an infant with amnion rupture sequence, who survived for 9 weeks after birth. A Medline search failed to reveal documentation of survival of a baby with severe craniofacial anomalies of this sequence for so long.

Amnion rupture sequence with 'exencephaly': MR findings in a surviving infant.
The amnion rupture sequence is a heterogeneous group of congenital deformities in which rupture of the amnion occurs early in gestation. Fragments of the amnion may adhere to, or encircle and constrict, embryonic parts. This may interrupt normal morphogenesis and cause deformity or even mutilation of formed structures; large cranial defects are a common feature. In contrast to other causes of c...
متن کاملNodular Cystic Basal Cell Carcinoma of the Trunk: a Diagnostic Dilemma in an Unsuspecting Youth
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) commonly affects the elderly and is mostly confined to the head and neck region. Only 10% of all cases occur on the trunk. We presented a case of bullous lesion on the abdomen in a young male, initially diagnosed by clinicians as a vascular nevus. Histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry (IHC) revealed it to be Nodular cystic variant of BCC. This rare va...
متن کاملAmniotic Band Syndrome: Is There Anything We Can Do In The Underdeveloped Countries Of Sub-Saharan Africa? Report Of 3 Cases And Literature Review
Amniotic band syndrome or sequence (ABS) is a fetal congenital malformation, mainly affecting limbs and mostly characterized by digital amputations and constrictions rings due to fibrous amniotic bands (AB). It can also affect the craniofacial area and internal organs. Two main pathological mechanisms have been proposed amnion rupture (exogenous theory) leading to fibrous bands, which wrap up t...
متن کاملA polymorphism in the matrix metalloproteinase-9 promoter is associated with increased risk of preterm premature rupture of membranes in African Americans.
Fetal membrane rupture is associated with increased expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and matrix degradation. We have determined the functional significance of a variable number tandem repeat and a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the MMP-9 gene on promoter activity and their association with preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). The 14 CA-repeat allele was a str...
متن کاملThe Biomechanics of Amnion Rupture: An X-Ray Diffraction Study
Pre-term birth is the leading cause of perinatal and neonatal mortality, 40% of which are attributed to the pre-term premature rupture of amnion. Rupture of amnion is thought to be associated with a corresponding decrease in the extracellular collagen content and/or increase in collagenase activity. However, there is very little information concerning the detailed organisation of fibrillar coll...
